Downward Dog and the Kennedy Center

Our Monday night programming for Teens Club was created with the intent of broadening our students’ exposure to new ideas, hobbies, and skills. With that in mind, we were excited to offer a yoga class throughout the month of January. Lisa Martinez, a licensed professional yoga instructor, volunteered her teaching skills to introduce our young people to a new way of moving and knowing their bodies.

They stretched, balanced, and laughed through Downward Facing Dogs, Warrior II, and more than a few successful attempts at headstands. Each session also ended with a time of quiet reflection on who God is and the peace and love he has for His children.

This next month has us loading up a bus and heading into DC for a series of free weekly concerts at the Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The students are excited about a tour of the building as well as a chance to see a music performance. A few have expressed hesitation at the chance of being subjected to ballet, but we are convinced they will come around! Anyone in the area is invited to join us from 5-8 for the next several Mondays.
