Casa Chirilagua’s Directiva de padres (Parent Committee) held its annual yard sale fundraiser for Kids Club on May 18th, raising $630, doubling the amount raised the previous year! Local Casa supporters donated hundreds of items to the sale including furniture, appliances and clothing. The Committee donates all proceeds to help reduce the cost of field trips for Kids Club students.

More than the donations earned, the best part of the yard sale was the enthusiasm and excitement our parents displayed. Throughout the planning stages of the fundraiser, our parents consistently told Mr. Julio, “Don’t worry about it – we’ve got this.” They were so eager to work together that the sale set-up and take-down was quick and easy. The fundraiser was forced to wrap up earlier than expected because of the rain but that did not deter anyone’s spirits.

Often at Casa Chirilagua programs and in daily life, we see kids working together in teams, but rarely do we have an opportunity to work together as parents. On this day, the parent teamwork was a beautiful testimony to the unity we strive to foster in the community. We look forward to stronger bonds among the parents. We hope for a deep trust that can lead to greater cooperation among all the families and children. With the money raised from the various fundraisers the Directiva has inspired more parents to dream big, including considering raising money to rent a location for a future summer camp lead by Casa Chirilagua.

We look forward to seeing what the 2013-14 school year holds for us. Join us in prayer from John 15:12, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” Pray with us that we may love each other with a holy love that is self-sacrificing and life-giving.
