Summer Kids Club Blast!

A Summer Kids Club kind of blast!

The second half of the Kids Club Summer program was just as exciting as the first. We took several kids to our 3rd annual Congreso Kids where the students played games and “Discovered a Different Direction” through the city themed music and skits in the plenary sessions. The theme of the event complimented well our summer curriculum, “Life is a Trip,” which challenged students to think through the road blocks and dead ends we face in life and instead choose to make a U-turn.

Our students were visited by a number of local artists throughout the summer who taught them new art techniques and challenged them to expand their creative perspectives. The students produced some great art work, some of which will be put on display for the “Art of Restoration” event in November. Giving students an opportunity to apply what they were learning in art sessions, we took them to visit the National Gallery of Art and traveled by bus and metro!

We finished out the last summer program week with a field day combined with the Cora Kelly Recreation Center summer program students, planned by the Community Church of God youth group. The CCoG youth also accompanied us on our final field trip to Great Waves Water Park. We finished our last week with a family Summer Celebration sponsored by Grace Community Church and supported by volunteers from various partner churches. The celebration was complete with face painting, snow cones, hot dogs, water games and a chance to get Ms. D or Ms. Emily in the dunk tank!

The summer came to a close with our 2nd annual “Perfect Attendance” trip to Great Country Farms, sponsored by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Purcellville, PA. We enjoyed the fresh air, picked peaches, played in the corn crib, mined for gems, bounced and fed the animals.

Thank you to all of our volunteers, interns, indigenous leaders and donors who helped make the summer great!
