November Volunteers of the Month

Nov 7, 2013

Each month it is a tough choice selecting just one volunteer to recognize. However, there is usually one individual or group that stands out. This month, the group standing out the most is our First Lego League volunteers.

Casa Chirilagua First Lego League

This fall Casa started a pilot First Lego League program for our Teens Club students, thanks to a community grant from Westminster Presbyterian Church. We had no idea what to expect, thus we couldn’t give our volunteers a good idea of what the program would look like. But that didn’t matter to this group.

No matter how many students show up for Lego League meetings, or what their attitudes are like when they get there, our volunteers are there, ready to encourage our students and help in any way they can. Justin Gillespie, Jean Rayhle, Deena Disraelly, and Geoffrey Chin each bring commitment and enthusiasm that is simply impressive. That’s what makes them this month’s Volunteers of the Month!

We are a community of people “learning together to love our neighbors as ourselves” in a Latino neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia.

As a faith-based Christian non-profit with a small staff and over 100 volunteers, we serve alongside more than 100 families and their children (1st-12th grades) each week through our community programs.

Our relational network of volunteers and donors reflects a diverse group of individuals from all over the Washington, D.C. metro area. As a non-profit, we rely on the community for assisting program directors on-site, being mentors, supplying the needs of our food pantry, and everything in between. Each member of our Casa community holds a unique gift, whether time, talent or treasure.
