Casa Chiri’s Christmas Party 2012

Dec 12, 2012

On December 8, We were invited to celebrate Jesus in the manger. The fourth and fifth graders dramatized the Christmas story. They created their own beautiful scenery and Grace Community Church lent us their Christmas costumes. The setting was beautiful and so were the kids as they shared the Advent story.

The 1st and 2nd graders sang Burrito Sabanero, which is a song about the little donkey who traveled to see Jesus. The 3rd graders sang Feliz Navidad. They loved engaging with this bilingual song as it relates the kids in their present reality living in both English and Spanish worlds. They live in a homeland and culture that is not their own and that they are learning to fully embrace. This is a reminder to us who live in the now-but-not-yet Kingdom and who long for the time when we see the Kingdom fully realized.

We ended the evening with a special surprise from the staff doing their “Rudolph Remix” which may have included a little Gangnam style and some LMFAO Shuffling. Videos of the performance will not be provided to the public. Seeing the Casa Chirilagua staff make fools of themselves at this level is strictly reserved for those who come to the party (though we may be willing to share the video for a small donation).

It was an evening to relax, enjoy family and friends, eat and be merry! See photos from our silly family photo booth! With all the laughter, jokes and smiles on parents’, kids’, volunteers’ faces, you could see that this year the Christmas party was a lovely night out, a chance to enjoy the Christmas season in the midst of the busy life.

This event would not have been possible if it were not for the many churches that participated. We had volunteers from Kids Club, Teens Club and small groups from many partner churches.

We are a community of people “learning together to love our neighbors as ourselves” in a Latino neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia.

As a faith-based Christian non-profit with a small staff and over 100 volunteers, we serve alongside more than 100 families and their children (1st-12th grades) each week through our community programs.
