Hotdogs, hamburgers, brownies, and futbol–the perfect way to end a year of Teens Club and celebrate the youth completing a grade. In the late afternoon on June 20, Matt and Rachel Hoppe opened their home to a herd of middle school students for a Word Cup watch party to commend the last day of school. The joy was palpable when the teens realized that the Honduras vs. Ecuador World Cup game was projected on the living room wall. The evening was filled with cheers and groans as the room of adolescents quickly took sides cheering for or against Honduras, depending on their families’ national heritage. The night ended with a raucous, if significantly off key, rendition of Happy Birthday for one of the middle school boys. We are thankful for these sweet moments of celebration with our students. Many of them have been part of our program since the very beginning, and it is in moments like this when we feel most like family.
